Prince William made ‘secret pact’ with Kate Middleton after heartbreaking split

While Prince William and Kate Middleton may seem like a happy fairytale romance, they once had a shocking split.

In 2007, Prince William and Kate Middleton shockingly split after it was reported William had been flirting and dancing with another woman on a night out.

But it also seems it was down to the fact the future king was unsure if he was ready to get married. However, he didn’t want to lose Kate for good, so he set about trying to fix their relationship.

Prince William and Kate’s ‘secret pact’

In August 2007, Prince William and Kate Middleton were fully alone for the first time since their split.

They headed to the secluded paradise island of Desroches in the Seychelles and even checked in under the names Martin and Rosemary Middleton. It seems this trip helped the pair heal from their break up.

Royal correspondent Kate Nicholl wrote in her book The Making of a Royal Romance about the split – and how the saved their relationship. She explained that the pair “knew that at some point they had to discuss the future”. Something which wasn’t easy for Prince William.

She wrote: “William assured Kate she was the one. William, who had inherited something of his father’s fear of commitment, knew he would lose Kate if he could not give her some form of guarantee.”

However, the young prince still wasn’t completely ready to get married, and so the couple made a pact.

A member of their inner circle explained: “They didn’t agree to get married there and then. What they made was a pact. William told Kate she was the one but he was not ready to get married. He promised her his commitment and said he would not let her down. In turn, she agreed to wait for him.”

Three years later, in 2010, William was finally ready and the pair got engaged during a private holiday in Kenya. Then in 2011 they finally said ‘I Do’ in a beautiful ceremony.

Since then the couple have been going from strength to strength, welcoming three children. They have become two of the most-loved royals.

Did Prince William and Kate Middleton split?

Briefly in April 2007, Prince William and Kate Middleton put a pause on their relationship.

Following reports that William had been flirting with another woman, the strain between them was believed to be noticeable as they attended Cheltenham Festival together that year.

It was believed William turned to his family for advice, and Nichol explained Prince Philip told William to “make up his mind on marriage”. However this was different to Charles’ approach, as he “endured the pain of a very public divorce” and didn’t want the same for his son.

Kate gave William an ultimatum, stating she wanted full commitment from him. But William’s fear of marriage at that age meant the couple headed in separate directions.

But of course the split didn’t last long and by June they had ended up back in each other’s lives. Having been adored ever since, the couple always find a way to shut down any divorce rumours.
