Prince William and Kate Middleton ‘could leave Adelaide Cottage for grander home’
Prince William and Kate Middleton may soon leave Adelaide Cottage behind as reports suggest the pair are eyeing a grand new royal residence.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are reportedly considering a move to Fort Belvedere, a grand “Gothic Revival” mansion nestled deep in Windsor Great Park.
The move would mark a significant upgrade from their current four-bedroom home.
“They feel they have outgrown Adelaide Cottage and need somewhere more substantial,” a royal insider told the Mail on Sunday. “This is the perfect new home for them. It has a swimming pool and a tennis court. Charlotte loves playing tennis.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton could move homes
Set on 59 secluded acres, Fort Belvedere features a tennis court, outdoor swimming pool, rose garden, large greenhouse, stables, paddocks, two lakes, and three staff cottages.
It is a property steeped in royal history. King Edward VIII famously signed his abdication papers there in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson.
Once used as a summer tea house by Queen Victoria, the estate was later restored by Edward VIII and has been home to various royals and high-profile tenants, including Canadian billionaire Galen Weston.
While insiders stress that no move is imminent, the idea of upgrading is reportedly being taken seriously.
William and Kate are reportedly assessing their long-term housing options as they plan the next chapter for their family.
The couple is also currently weighing up son Prince George’s school options, with Eton College seen as a likely choice.
Amid the change, the couple wants to ensure they maintain privacy, security, and a strong family environment.
William and Kate have also previously been linked to Royal Lodge, where Prince Andrew currently resides.
However, that option appears to have stalled due to Andrew’s resistance to vacate. A move into Windsor Castle was also floated but is reportedly off the table.
Royal Insider has contacted reps for Kensington Palace for comment.
Why did Prince William and Kate move to Adelaide Cottage?
In the summer of 2022, Prince William and Kate made a surprising move from Kensington Palace to the relatively modest Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate.
At the time, royal experts said the couple wanted to be closer to Queen Elizabeth II during her final months and provide a more grounded, private upbringing for their three children.
“There are plenty of other places they could have moved to. But Adelaide Cottage fits with their desire as parents to be a normal family. There aren’t servants and they don’t have 30 rooms,” royal expert Duncan Larcombe told OK! magazine in 2024.
Royal author Katie Nicholl also noted: “Being able to live in the middle of Windsor Home Park, where they’re not overlooked and can come and go in complete privacy, makes the downsize from Kensington Palace worth it on every level.”
But now, after three years at Adelaide Cottage, sources say the Wales family may be preparing to make a change.
As Kate continues her quiet recovery following cancer treatment and the children settle into life at Lambrook School, any move will likely be gradual.
However, a potential relocation to Fort Belvedere may offer the family the space and seclusion they desire.
