Royal Family in Shock: Meghan Markle ‘Shatters’ Centuries-Old Tradition in Engagement Photos

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s official engagement photos were nothing short of stunning.

The loved-up pair announced their engagement in November 2017. Months later, Harry and Meghan married in a fairytale ceremony at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

But looking back at their official engagement snaps, one royal commentator has suggested Meghan actually broke royal protocol with her outfit choice.

Meghan and Harry’s engagement was celebrated with stunning pictures

The beautiful images reflected Harry and Meghan‘s love story and showed us just how loved-up they were in the early stages of their romance.

The photographs were taken by fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski at Frogmore House in Windsor.

One picture showed Harry and Meghan embracing each other as her left hand, with her stunning engagement ring on full display, rested against his cheek. They both looked happier than ever.

Another image showed the couple smiling at the camera, as she rested her left hand on Harry’s.

However, Meghan’s sheer dress in the second photo sparked debate.

Meghan ‘broke protocol’ with outfit choice for official engagement photos

Royal commentator Richard Eden has analysed the outfit choice in a piece for the Daily Mail.

Meghan wore a Ralph & Russo ball gown from its fall 2017 couture collection. It featured a black feathered skirt with a sheer, long-sleeved top with gold detailing.

He wrote: “The first breach was during her official engagement photograph when she wore a sheer gown – which is a real no-no for daytime attire.

“This was Meghan declaring, when she barely had her foot in the palace door, that she would be treating royal protocol as ‘guidance only’.

“Eyebrows were also raised when the price of this haute couture outfit was revealed: an eye-watering £56,000.”

At the time the images were released, of course, royal fans shared their thoughts. While some were bothered by the hefty price tag, others loved Meghan’s look.

Someone commented on Instagram: “I love the way Meghan dresses. I really hope the palace doesn’t change her style of clothes… she’s amazing!”

Another person gushed: “So beautiful!”

Eyebrows were also raised when the price of this haute couture outfit was revealed.

However, one person wrote: “I’m shocked that she was allowed to wear something that would look like it’s see-through.”

Since Meghan and Harry’s engagement, a LOT has happened. They tied the knot in May 2018 and quickly became beloved senior royals.

In May 2019, they welcomed their first child together, son Prince Archie.

However, in early 2020, they announced their decision to step back from their senior royal roles and become “financially independent”.

Sussexes’ new life in America

Harry, 40, and Meghan, 44, moved to the United States after completing their final royal engagement in March 2020.

They now live in Montecito, California, with Archie and their daughter, Princess Lilibet, who was born in June 2021.

But the big move hasn’t come without drama. Harry and Meghan have become estranged from the royal family following a string of explosive tell-all interviews and Harry’s memoir, Spare.

They made a series of allegations about the royals and their time within the monarchy, causing relations to become strained.

In May this year, Harry admitted he wants to reconcile with his family. But after so many years of damaging claims and remarks, is there really a way back? Guess only time will tell!
