Prince Harry leaves charity ‘gobsmacked’ with ‘significant’ donation

Prince Harry has left a charity “completely gobsmacked” by making a “significant” donation.

The Duke of Sussex, 40, is known for his charity work alongside his wife, Meghan Markle. Back in January, the couple stepped out in California to help those impacted by the wildfires at the time.

Months on, Prince Harry has received praised by the director of a Nottingham-based charity for his donation.

The Himmah food bank said it has received an undisclosed sum from Prince Harry, which will fund more than 650 food parcels for vulnerable families in Nottingham.

The charity aims to tackle food poverty, racism and educational inequalities.

In a letter to Himmah released by the charity, Harry said: “Nottingham holds a special place in my heart, having had the privilege of visiting and supporting the community there for over a decade.

I could not believe it when we got the email.

“The incredible work Himmah does to address food insecurity, poverty and social exclusion should be recognised and applauded. I’m happy to be able to play a small part in your mission to bring communities together by creating opportunities and support for those facing hardship.”

Meanwhile, director at Himmah Sajid Mohammed said: “I could not believe it when we got the email.

“To have been chosen by such a high-profile royal once is amazing but to have been supported by Prince Harry too left us completely gobsmacked.”

Meghan Markle’s donation to food bank charity kept secret

This isn’t the first time the Sussexes have made a donation to the charity.

In 2020, Meghan made a £10,000 donation to Himmah with funds from The Royal Foundation. At the time, the duchess’ donation remained a secret until March 2021 – days after hers and Harry’s tell-all Oprah interview aired.

Mr Mohammad spoke out months after the donation and revealed why they didn’t go public.

He said: “The reason we didn’t go public is the trustees took a view that she was like Marmite and there could be reputational issues – people not liking our charity because they don’t like her – so we decided to keep the donation secret.

“After the interview we realised we’re a poverty and race organisation [and] that we needed to show solidarity.”

Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview

In March 2021, Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired in both the US and the UK.

In the interview, they made a series of allegations about their time within the monarchy.

One particular allegation was that Harry had been asked by an unnamed royal family member “how dark” their son Archie’s skin might be when he’s born.

After the interview, Buckingham Palace issued a statement. They called the allegations “concerning” and said they would address them privately.
