Reason why Kate, William, George, Charlotte & Louis wear matching outfits – & the meaning behind their favourite colour

A fashion expert has revealed there is a key reason why Prince William and Princess Kate always wear matching outfits with George, 11, Charlotte, nine, and Louis, six.

And it turns out the reason is not just so they look cohesive.

Fashion expert Amber Graafland told Fabulous: “When Kate, Prince William and their children wear coordinated outfits it’s about more than just looking good.

“By complementing each other, and sticking to a colour theme, they are showcasing a united front.

“It’s a technique Prince William and Princes Kate use to show in tune they are when they attend official engagements together, and they also deploy it with their children.

“Adept at using their clothing to convey coded message, the Waleses know that by presenting a refined and harmonious image they convey a close-knit family with a strong bond. It also makes them instantly recognisable on the world stage.”

Co-ordinated Christmas

We recently saw the family channel a green theme as they stepped out on Christmas Day with the royal family at Sandringham.

Princess Kate looked flawless in a hunter-green Alexander McQueen coat, and finished off the look with a tartan scarf.

The tartan element was subtly mirrored in the ties worn by Prince George and Prince Louis.

Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte was seen wearing a navy tartan coat, which perfectly complemented the blue of William’s tie.

Amber continued: “Kate in particular uses her clothes to convey that not only is she a key part of the royal family, but she’s a wife and a mother.

“By dressing in the same colour she is reinforcing her family’s role within the monarchy, whilst also subtly reaffirming her role as a mother.

“The Wales’s carefully coordinated looks also serve to create the perfect camera moment, which can be particularly powerful when your image is projected around the world within minutes.

“After a period of intense uncertainty, the couple clearly feel the need to put on a public display of strength and unity.

“With a question mark over the King’s health, the public are looking to William and Kate for stability.”

Before this, we saw the family-of-five looking festive in red at Princess Kate’s Together at Christmas carol concert.

The mum-of-two dazzled in a red, double-breasted Alexander McQueen coat was designed by Sarah Burton, with her family coordinating subtly.

We’ve previously seen the family dress in a coordinated blue colour as they joined the nation to clap for the NHS in April 2020.

Princess Kate led her family with a blue floral Ghost dress, with her family in various shades of blue.

The fashion expert said the Waleses consistently turn to blue for one particular reason.

Amber explained: “Not only does this calming colour conveys serenity
and stability, but it also symbolises reliability.”

Power couple

Amber previously spoke about the effect created when Prince William and Princess Kate dress to match during public engagements.

She revealed: “For some successful celebrities this is the gateway to creating a lucrative brand, very much in the mould of the Beckhams.

“Having an instantly recognisable couples’ style can mean big business.

“For Kate and William however it’s not about sharing an identity, far from it in fact.

“For the Waleses it’s a way of demonstrating that they’re totally in tune; dressing to complement each other without losing their individual identities.”

Amber said that the couple show they are a team with their complementary clothing but not in a “shouty matchy way like Posh’n’Becks in matching leather.”
