Prince William’s nine fierce words in Kate Middleton interview shows just how protective he is
In 2010, the country celebrated as Prince William and his then-girlfriend, known to the public as simply Kate Middleton, announced they were getting engaged.
After eight years of courtship, William proposed to his university sweetheart during a romantic trip to Kenya and she happily accepted. The loved-up couple then gave an interview to ITV News offering a glimpse into their fairytale-esque relationship. It was during this interview, which marked the point when the nation started to really get to know the future Princess of Wales, that William stepped in with nine fierce words, making it clear he would be protective of his bride at every turn. As detailed in his new biography Catherine, Princess of Wales, royal correspondent Robert Jobson spoke of how William’s devotion in that moment was clear to see, at what would have been a nerve-wracking time for the then-inexperienced royal Kate.

During this now famous interview, Kate was asked if she found it ‘intimidating’ to be following in the footsteps of mother-in-law Princess Diana, who remains a ‘massive iconic figure’ many years after her tragic death. In response, Kate stated: ‘Yes, I do’. For many viewers, this was the first time they’d heard Kate speak in public, and some were surprised to hear how posh the middle-class girl’s accent sounded – reportedly prompting ‘gentle ribbing’ from members of her own family. As she’s relaxed into her role however, the now mother-of-three has shed some of her early over formality.
All jokes aside, however, what William said next, however, must have surely made the bride-to-be feel more at ease. In a passage published by the Mail Online, Jobson wrote: “William stepped in protectively to say: ‘No one is going to try to fill my mother’s shoes – what she did was fantastic. It’s about making your own future and your own destiny, and Kate will do a very good job of that.” The fascinating biography, which you can buy from August 1, tells ‘the full story of how Catherine, the Princess of Wales, became the widely admired woman she is today, offering a closer look at her life inside a ‘modern-day fairytale’.
According to the biography description: “Her self-deprecation, willingness to laugh at herself, solid work ethic – along with her husband, William, warmth, and accessibility – this Royal Family ‘s dynamic duo have become the most popular members of the Royal Family. But it’s not come without its fair share of commentary and scandal, particularly with recent revelations on the relationship of the ‘Fab Four’ with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as well as her own health scares.” You can pre-order a hardcover copy of Catherine, the Princess of Wales for £15 on Amazon.
