Angel Reese’s Surprising Criticism: ‘Why Has the Media Forgotten the WNBA Superstar?
Angel Reese has been vocal about her opinions in recent months, and in the latest episode of her podcast, “Unapologetically Angel,” she teamed up with Sheryl Swoopes to call out the media for failing to give superstar A’ja Wilson the recognition she deserves after winning the WNBA MVP award.
Wilson was voted the unanimous MVP and has led the Las Vegas Aces into the semifinals as they aim to repeat as WNBA champions. This season, Wilson averaged 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.8 steals.
While Reese has had an impressive rookie season with the Chicago Sky, she feels the league and media aren’t adequately recognizing just how phenomenal Wilson’s performance has been for the Las Vegas Aces.
“A’ja, we want to give you your flowers because the media did not do their big one about acknowledging your accomplishments. I just want to say congratulations on the scoring record!” Reese said. “You’re amazing, and you’ve always been an incredible player—someone who’s been super inspiring to me. I’ve watched you since you were at South Carolina.”
Wilson has had a career unlike any other, yet there’s been considerable controversy over the recognition this season, with rookie Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese often stealing the spotlight.
This overshadowing of Wilson’s accomplishments seems to be a key reason why Swoopes and Reese called out the media for not doing their part in acknowledging her contributions, which you can appreciate from a young player like Reese who truly looks up to Wilson as an idol and a trailblazers for the women’s game of basketball.
