Princess Charlotte is growing up fast! The young royal has stepped further into the spotlight in recent years and fans have noticed a newfound confidence in her style – something that once put her at odds with Princess Kate. Some onlookers were convinced they spotted a mini disagreement between the pair at a major public event, over Charlotte’s ‘look’.
Kate stole the show at the 2024 Trooping the Colour as she made her first official appearance since disclosing her cancer battle. The royal, who has now completed her chemotherapy treatment, was warmly greeted by the crowds as she appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony with her family for King Charles’s official birthday celebrations. According to some eagle-eyed onlookers, Charlotte tried to assert her own preferred style as the family greeted wellwishers from the palace – prompting a silent ‘dispute’ with her mum.
A video shared on Instagram compiled from images taken on the day shows the mother-of-three repeatedly pulling her daughter’s long hair back over her shoulder. Charlotte, meanwhile, kept trying to wear her hair to the front. Social media users were quick to comment, with a number remarking on how quickly Charlotte has grown up and found her own style. “This is literally me all the time and my mum just puts it back,” one wrote. A second added: “Same Charlotte .. it shapes my face.”
Mother and daughter had an adorable matching moment at the event with Charlotte wearing a sweet nautical-inspired outfit that took its cues from Kate’s Jenny Packham dress. While the future Queen’s white column gown had a navy-and-white striped bow at the neckline, Charlotte’s navy sailor-style dress featured white piping around the waist and sleeves, and along the panelled collar at the back. She wore a white bow in her hair, and a pair of white Mary-Janes.
It’s by no means the only time Charlotte and Kate have coordinated their outfits. Perhaps their most memorable matching moment came at the Coronation of King Charles, when they both wore silver bullion and crystal flower crowns by Jess Collet and Alexander McQueen. Just like her mum, Charlotte is emerging as a little fashion icon, whose style has evolved in recent years in keeping with her age. For her appearance at Wimbledon in 2024, she wore a polka dot dress, styled with pink Ray-Ban sunglasses and a touch of lip gloss – and many noted it marked a change for the young royal. Bethan Holt, Style Director at the Daily Telegraph told PEOPLE at the time, “It felt like a bit of a milestone, like she’s transitioning from a sweet little girl in smocked floral dresses to a slightly more grown-up tween vibe.”
