Angel Reese Could Lose Major WNBA Record
A’ja Wilson and the defending champion Las Vegas Aces finished off the season sweep of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Friday night with a 78-74 win. The Aces have now won six of their last seven games, getting hot at the right time with the WNBA playoffs looming.
Wilson continued her MVP run against the Fever with 15 points and 17 rebounds. In total, Wilson now has 435 rebounds on the season and is primed to break a record recently set by Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese.
Early on in September, Reese set the WNBA record for most rebounds in a single season with 446. Wilson is only 12 rebounds away from creating a new rebounding record.
With Reese announcing her season-ending wrist injury last weekend, Wilson could very well surpass Reese in rebounds with three games left on the Aces’ schedule.
For the season, Reese has been the best rebounder in the league, averaging 13.1 per game. Wilson is second with 11.9 rebounds per game prior to the win over Indiana. Reese could lose her record as soon as Sunday, September 15, when the Aces host the Connecticut Sun.
Reese suffered her season-ending injury on September 6 in a 92-78 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. Had she been able to finish out the Sky’s final six games, the record would have likely stayed with her.
Wilson has already set the WNBA record for most points in a season. If she breaks another record, the 2024 MVP award will be hers.
