Thomas Markle, 80, has expressed disappointment over his daughter Meghan‘s latest Netflix series With Love, Meghan.

In a candid interview with The Mail on Sunday, Thomas accused Meghan of “faking it for the cameras” and trying too hard to maintain her public profile. His comments come after Meghan’s remark in the show to Mindy Kaling.

“It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.”

The Markle name controversy

A major point of tension between father and daughter revolves around Meghan’s decision to distance herself from the Markle family name. According to Thomas, this decision has deeply disappointed Meghan’s late grandmother, who “loved Meghan very much.”

“My mother was proud to be a Markle. So am I. Meghan never had a problem with the Markle name until she met Prince Harry,” he told The Mail on Sunday.

Thomas also addressed the portrayal of Meghan’s childhood in the show, specifically the idea that she was a “latchkey” child. He vehemently disagreed with this claim, recalling that he would personally pick her up from school every day or send a car to do so if he was busy. He pointed out that money was never an issue in their household and that they often dined out.

With Love, Meghan has faced a barrage of negative reviews since its release. The eight-part series, which features Meghan cooking with celebrity friends and offering hosting tips, has been panned by critics for its lack of substance. A review from The Guardian called it “gormless lifestyle filler,” criticizing its “pointless” content. The Telegraph gave it just two stars, describing it as “insane” and an “exercise in narcissism.”

The show has also been criticized for being out of touch with the target audience. Dianne Nelmes, the former head of ITV Daytime, noted that the concept felt outdated, pointing out that young women now turn to social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube for lifestyle advice, rather than traditional television shows.

Meghan’s newly launched As Ever brand has also been marred by controversy. The brand’s logo has drawn accusations of plagiarism from the mayor of a small town in Mallorca, who noted similarities between Meghan’s design and the town’s 14th-century coat of arms.

Despite the criticisms, Meghan has admitted to making “mistakes” but remains optimistic, stating that she is “learning every day.” It remains to be seen how her show and brand will evolve and whether she can overcome the public backlash she currently faces.
